Championship Weekend 2006
This years championships would host both Division I and Division II teams, so there would be a whole lot of basketball to be played and enjoyed by many.
Saturday, May 6, 2006 would kick off championship weekend and we would start off with the Division II championships. The first game of the day would be an 8 & under battle between the Bentalou Bombers and the newly formed Baltimore Panthers. The first 6 minutes of this game would be like a track meet! These young fellows would race up and down the court like the energizer bunny! At the end of the first quarter Bentalou would take a 6 to 5 lead. In the second period, both teams would continue to push the ball up and down the floor and hit some big shots. When you watch an 8 and under game, you expect to see some turnovers but the skill level of these players was exceptional. At half time, Bentalou would hold a two-point lead. (14 to 12). In the second half, Bentalou would come out with their “guns loaded”, scoring on their first three possessions and forcing the Panthers to use two quick timeouts to regroup. The Panthers would turn it up on the defensive end of the floor to get back in this game and by the end of the third period the score would be Bentalou 22, Baltimore Panthers 18.
These two teams would go at it in the final period, going after loose balls, challenging every shot and making free throws. The team that had the least turnovers would win this game, and the Bentalou Bombers would outlast the Panthers in this one. Final score would be 34-26. (Bentalou Bombers).

Team Mossilini vs. Severna Park 3-D
Both teams would come out a little tight in the beginning of this game, but after a couple of times up and down the court we would be in for one tough game. At the end of the first period, the 3-D team would hold a two- point lead. (8-6). In the second period, both teams would play tough team defense and neither team was able to gain an advantage and at halftime this game would be tied at 16-16. Both teams came out very aggressive in the second half, but Team Mossilini would miss a ton of free throws in the final two periods while the 3-D team would toughen up and get the 5-point victory for the 10 and under Division II championship.

Mt. Royal/Team Melo vs. Team Buckey Lee
The big floor at Morgan State University appeared to take a toll on both of these teams, in the first quarter of this game. For many of these young fellows, it was the first time that they had played basketball at this level and you could see that they were very excited. At the end of the first quarter, Mt. Royal would lead the game by a score of 6-3. Team Buckey Lee would turn the “D” up in the second period and force Mt. Royal to turn the ball over and get some easy buckets out of it. At the half, Mt. Royal would lead by a score of 13-9.In the third period, turnovers would once again hurt Mt. Royal and Team Buckey Lee would go on a 11 to 5 run and take the lead at the end of the period 20 to 18 and limiting Mt. Royal to just two buckets in six minutes of play. In the final, the inability to make free throws would kill Mt. Royal and Team Buckey Lee would gut this game out and win it by one point. (28-27). Not bad for some first time players, not bad at all!
12 & under
Mays Hornets vs. Southern Maryland Mustangs
The Hornets would waste no time getting after the Mustangs, turning the heat up early in this game, creating turnovers and getting easy buckets. At the end of the first quarter, the Hornets would lead by a score of 15-5. The Mustangs would attempt to get back in the game in the second period and by halftime the score would be 26-14, Hornets.
In the second half, turnovers would hurt the Mustangs and they just didn’t have an answer for what the Hornets were doing on offense, and their shots would not fall. This just was not the Mustangs day. Final score in this game would be 44-21 and Mays Hornets would claim the 12 & under Division II championship of the Maryland AAU.
13 & under
HCYP Sharks vs. Mays Hornets
This 13 & under match-up would be a tight game from start to finish with both of these teams going at one another, getting on the floor for loose balls and attacking the basket, this would not be a blowout, that’s for sure; both of these teams were going for broke! At the half, the Mays Hornets would hold a one-point lead, 25-24. The second half would be a chess match with both coaches attempting to gain some type of advantage for their team in this tough match-up. The Mays Hornets would tough the game out and win this match-up by a score of 47-44. There had to be a winner and a loser, that’s just the way it is, but the true of the matter is that both of these teams should represent Maryland well in the Division II Nationals.
14 & under
Maryland Blazers vs. Baltimore Panthers
The Blazers would get off to a quick start, going inside to the “Big Fellows” for some tough buckets and establishing their inside game; but the Panthers would soon wake up and get into the game. The first quarter would end with the Blazers holding a five point lead. {17-12}. In the second period, the Blazers would turn the heat up on the defensive end of the floor and get some quick buckets off of turnovers, and they would limit the Panthers to scoring only five points in this period of play. At the half, the Blazers would take a 30-17 lead into the locker room. The second half would start off the same way as the beginning of the game, with the Blazers going to their strength; ‘the inside game’, and the third period would end with the Blazers up by a score of 40-25. In the final period, the Panthers would fight back and attempt a run, but they could not knock down shots. The final score in this one would be 52-44, the Maryland Blazers.
